Lectio Divina--Sacred Reading
The deeply personal practice of lectio unfolds in four non-linear movements. In this approach lectio proper is the reading of the text in a slow, thoughtful and reflective way, perusing the text in all its imaginal richness. The second movement is meditatio, which suggests ruminating over the text either by repetition, recitation, or memorization, which allows us to hold our a chosen sacred word or phrase from the text in mindful awareness. The third movement is oratio, prayerful expression of gratitude, praise, remorse, or petition in response to the savored word in our consciousness. And contemplatio,, is our soulful resting in the presence of Mystery, which moves us beyond words, images, and concepts toward a quiet abiding in silence.
